I've sold avalanche airbags for the past decade. Guides are the biggest holdouts in adopting the technology. Time after time, I've heard guides use the exact same excuses... "It only increases the risk tolerance putting you in more danger" "They're too heavy" "They're too expensive" "Our job is to AVOID avalanche hazards..." The fact is that accidents happen. Guides are not infallible (although quite a few seem to think the opposite). Mistakes get made and people can be killed. Airbags are NOT a magical life saving device, but the amount of success stories I've heard (most of which go undocumented) far outweigh the downsides. In my opinion, airbags should be mandated for any commercial backcountry mountain adventures (ski/board/sled).
