Election investigation finds no wrongdoing

Anonymous complaint discounted

A police investigation has uncovered no criminal behaviour in Whistler’s 2005 municipal elections.

The investigation was prompted by a complaint from a community member after reports a municipal employee intimidated a council candidate.

The municipal worker called candidate Bob Lorriman in the days leading up to November’s election to ask who he was endorsing for mayor.

In an interview with Pique Newsmagazine at the time Lorriman said he believed the call was meant to influence him with the underlying message that if he were supporting Ted Nebbeling for mayor, he would lose votes at municipal hall.

The RCMP investigation focused on whether or not the phone call, which came from the hall, was intimidating as defined in the Local Government Act.

"An RCMP investigation was undertaken to review the concerns and no evidence was secured to support allegations of intimidation as defined in the Local Government Act so there are going to be no charges under that act," said RCMP spokesperson Constable Devon Jones.

Police will not reveal the name of the community member who filed the complaint.
