Thelma Johnstone has joined the race to be the next mayor of Whistler. Johnstone, who has been on council since 1988, brings to five the number of declared candidates for mayor, including half of the existing councillors. Johnstone is the Chamber of Commerce administrator and is also chair of the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District. She was a school trustee prior to joining council. Other declared candidates for mayor include councillors Max Kirkpatrick and Hugh O’Reilly, realtor Greg Lee and Helmut Banka, a mason. The candidates for councillor positions include incumbents Bill Murray, Kristi Wells and Dave Kirk, Don Goodall, Richard Wyne and Ken Melamed. The deadline for candidates to file nomination papers is Oct. 11. The election is Nov. 16. o o o Banka’s campaign got a little boost from the province last week, when he won $1,500 in a provincial lottery. It may be interesting to see where he stands now vis-a-vis the province’s plan to introduce Club Keno machines and Monaco-style casinos. o o o Greg Lee’s on a roll too, having recently teamed with Doug Barr to win the Whistler Racquet and Golf Resort’s Outdoor Club Championships.
