Embark on a photographic journey

Feel the travel bug coming on? If a vacation isn't in the budget, make your way to the Fairmont Chateau Whistler Friday to check out the Night of the Nomads.

Hosted by Late and Unique Nighttime Alternatives (LUNA), the event features one of Whistler's very own nomads, Lena Rowat, who will share Legs to Logan: A Wilderness Journey on Skis from Vancouver to the Top of Canada , a short film that documents her 2,700-kilometre ski expedition.

You'll also have a chance to win some great prizes through a silent auction, like a bus tour of Europe, a trip through East Asia or some stellar travel gear. Tour companies Intrepid, Busabout, Moose Travel Network and Hostelling International will be on-hand to showcase their adventures. Northland Medical Clinic will be offering travel advice and adventurers will be able to test their travel savvy and share stories with fellow travelers.

"Night of the Nomads is going to light a fire in people to see parts of the world they haven't seen before" LUNA Community Event Coordination Trainee, Jessica Jones, said in a recent press release. "It's going to be impossible to walk out the door at the end of the night and not have a mental list of at least three places you can't wait to see and a good idea of how to get there."

Night of the Nomads takes place on Friday, March 19 in the Fairmont Chateau's Frontenac Ballroom at 7:30 p.m. Anyone interested in bidding on auction items should bring a credit card, as payment will be accepted at the end of the evening by PayPal. Entry is $7 or $5 with a LUNA member card. Tickets include a chance to win take-home travel prizes. Plus, the first 40 people to buy tickets from Whistler's Foto Source will be entered into a draw for a Lonely Planet book. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Get 'em while they're hot

The hottest (artistic) ticket at Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival is the Pro Photo Showdown, and this year promises to be no exception, with a roster of six talented photographers selected to battle it out for top spot - and a $10,000 cash prize - on Thursday, April 22.

For the 13 th annual competition, organizers have selected Jeremy Koreski, Brian Bielmann, Grant Gunderson, Yves Garneau, Mason Mashon and Erik Seo to create and present a nine-minute curated slideshow that showcases and celebrates the craft of action sport photography. And since these pros all come from a variety of backgrounds - some specialize in surf, others in ski and some dabble in a bit of every sport - the audience can expect to see a range of photos in the show.
