Program Postponed Emily Carr University has decided not to go forward with this summer's youth art program.

Emily Carr University of Art + Design has cancelled its 2014 summer Satellite Studio of Teens in Whistler due to low enrollment.

The university has postponed the program until 2015.

The Resort Municipality of Whistler, which signed an agreement with the university in December, said in an email that Emily Carr representatives were "still very excited with the opportunities within Whistler," with additional programs this fall and into 2015.

The two-week course in July was meant to give students aged 15 to 18 a chance to explore the resort through art and design.

The course cost $1,500 for domestic students and $1,700 for international students, and is modelled on Emily Carr's Vancouver Summer Institute. It is aimed at those with an interest in community planning, architecture, mapping, drawing, and design.

SVMF launches talent search

Attention all Whistler and Sea to Sky music talents. The Squamish Valley Music Festival wants to put you on the stage in front of 35,000 music fans.

Rising Stars is a new talent competition launched by the festival and Galaxie music channel, giving musicians from across Canada the chance to win $3,000 and a chance to perform at the festival, which takes place in Squamish from Aug. 8 to 10.

Headlining performers already confirmed for the festival include Eminem, Bruno Mars and Arcade Fire.

"We are looking for the very best undiscovered talent in Canada," says Paul Runnals, Executive Producer of the Festival and judge for Rising Stars.

To enter Rising Stars, performers must upload an MP3 or video to http://risingstar.strutta.com. Once public voting begins, fans can then vote for their favourite artist (voting is limited to one vote per day). After the public provides feed back, a panel of judges will decide the winner.

Rising Star will be accepting applications now through June 30. Public voting will be open July 1 – July 15 and the winner will be announced July 21.

The judges are: Paul Runnals — executive producer of Squamish Valley Music Festival, Erik Hoffman — senior vice president of Talent for Live Nation Canada, Rob Calder — co-owner of Boompa Productions and founder of Secret Study, Mike Usinger — music editor for the Georgia Straight, Zachary Monson — programmer for Galaxie and Jeffrey Remedios — founder of Arts & Crafts.

Hairfamous: a brotherly blend

Greg Reamsbottom, a.k.a Grateful Greg of Whistler's The Hairfarmers, is indeed appreciative that his brother Wes is a fine guitarist.

Wes, who plays with local band Almost Famous, is joining Greg at Fifty-Two 80's first Backyard BBQ Party of the season at the Four Seasons Hotel on Thursday, June 26.

Wes stepped in because the other half of the Hairfarmers, Guitar Doug, isn't available.

"We don't usually get to play together in public because I'm always busy and he's always busy," said Grateful Greg. "To do it anywhere other than at Christmas around the dinner table with our family is pretty rare."

He adds he is the oldest of four brothers, while Wes is the youngest, and his taste in music had an impact on all his siblings.

"I got to influence them," he said with a laugh.

Muse in the Meadows calls writers

Local writer Rebecca Wood Barrett is offering two residential writing programs this summer in the Pemberton Valley.

Muse in the Meadows offers writers the chance to start or continue a project under the guidance of Wood Barrett. Fiction and non-fiction writers are welcome.

"It's in the Upper Pemberton Valley. It's a very quiet and serene property on six acres," she says. "Being around other writers trying to achieve the same thing, getting work done in quiet place but feeling the energy of other people."

The dates are July 6 to 13 and Aug. 10 to 17, and take place at the Spotted Raven B&B, all meals are included. It costs $1,500 each week. Nonstaying participants pay $400.
