Carr senses Squamish’s needs The Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design is looking into the possibility of expanding its classes in Squamish. Representatives from the Institute met with members of the Squamish Economic Development Commission earlier this year to ascertain local needs and work through the feasibility of such a venture. "Discussions are at a preliminary stage," says Elizabeth Edwards who is co-ordinator of the school of continued and network education. "We have to find out what the needs of that region are. We are very interested in that." The Emily Carr school currently offers a basic outreach program in art and design in Squamish. Local designers and artists have been solicited for training as instructors and teachers from the Institute also travel up to Squamish on a regular basis. "The course would probably develop along the same lines as our transition program," says Edwards. "We have an introductory four-part course that covers various areas of art and design, two dimension and three dimensional design, photography, drawing, two and three dimensional art and painting... It really all depends on what the needs of the region are."
