Program kick-starts careers The Whistler Employment Centre has a program to convince employers to make room for full-time students wanting a summer job that could lead to a career. The federal government’s Summer Career Placement Program is open for applications from both employers and students, says employment centre manager Debbie Brisson. But the dealine looms soon: March 28 for jobs to start May 20. Seventeen companies applied last year, with eight getting grants to hire a student, Brisson says. Employment isn’t to be just a "joe-job" but must offer a learning experience. Participating employers have included Whistler Centre for Business and the Arts, Ecosign, the public library, Whistler Resort Association and the municipality. The employee’s pay is partially subsidized by the program, Brisson explains. A similar provincial program is due soon.
