The first public draft of the municipality’s long-awaited Environmental Strategy Plan should come to council shortly. The purpose of the strategy is to inventory existing municipal pro-environmental initiatives and to recognize additional areas where the municipality may become pro-active in protecting and enhancing the natural environment. The environmental strategy maps out objectives and strategies for meeting those objectives within seven categories: air quality, water quality and conservation, solid waste management, hazardous waste management, energy conservation and transportation, land use/fish and wildlife, and municipal responsibility and education. The strategy also works in conjunction with the municipality’s monitoring program. One of the core objectives for the environmental strategy is to establish a system that will allow sustainable development. The strategy uses a 1987 definition by the World Commission on Environment and Development: "Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." The origins of the Environmental Strategy go back to 1992, when council requested staff prepare an environmental policy for the municipality as part of the Official Community Plan and Comprehensive Development Plan.
