Clocking in at between three and 15 minutes, the films in the lineup of the Sea to Sky film festival are a fraction of the length of a typical Hollywood feature. However, little films can leave big impressions. A good short film can say in a few minutes what Hollywood films need two hours to hash out. The result is typically quirkier, funnier, sadder, and more creative fare.
Sadly, the short film is an art form people other than film school students rarely get to see. But for the last eight years running, residents of the Whistler and Squamish area have been able to count on the Sea to Sky Film Festival to deliver a quality set to their doorstep.
Organized by Squamish local and filmmaker in her own right Adriane Polo, this year’s festival lineup, 11 films in total, contains homegrown submissions as well as offerings from across Canada, California, and one from the other side of the world, Sydney Australia. A five-member judging panel composed of local writers, film directors, and actors will determine the best of the fest. Local actor Mark McConchie will be hosting the event, and a handful of the directors are expected to be on hand to offer insider views on their work.
Polo has been at the helm of the festival since its inception and says that from the beginning, the aim of the event has simply been to introduce different genres of films with greater creative freedom to the local audience. With this year’s subjects ranging from deadly spider bites, to drug deals gone wrong, to eagles, to books made of water, to the evolution of humankind, festival-goers can expect the unexpected.
The eighth annual Sea to Sky Film Festival takes place Monday, Sept. 8, in the Eagle Eye Theatre at Howe Sound Secondary School in Squamish. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 students/seniors, available in advance at Highlands Video, Mostly Books and Howe Sound Inn as well as at the door.
