Expressions hosting glass fusing workshop

Those who have admired Vancouver glass artist Jeremy Dane Morris’ funky sushi dishes and serving bowls at Expressions might want to give his craft a try themselves this weekend.

Morris will present a workshop on glass-fusing techniques in the gallery on Saturday from 10 a.m.—2 p.m.

The process involves heating layers of cut, stacked glass inside a glass kiln to melt them together to form a single layer of glass. The resulting piece of glass may then be reheated in the kiln and shaped in a mold to make bowls, plates and other shallow forms.

Morris will instruct on the appropriate type of glass to use, glass fusing design, glass cutting and how to fire glass in a kiln. Participants will create test pieces as well as a larger piece such as a sushi plate. The workshop is suitable for beginners.

Morris was born in Sri Lanka and grew up in Ontario, graduating from Guelph University’s Fine Art program in 1979. He moved to B.C. in 1996, honing his glass fusing and slumping techniques while studying with master craftsman Melanie Rowe.

Morris runs his own glass-fusing studio in Vancouver. Along with Expressions his work can be seen in galleries and retail outlets throughout B.C. and Alberta, including the B.C. Glass Art Association’s biennial exhibition currently underway at the Simon Fraser University Gallery.

Saturday’s workshop registration fee is $95 including materials. For more information on the workshop call Expressions at 604-932-2822.
