The Whistler Extreme Women's Volleyball team travelled to Burnaby for the Tier I Provincial Championships on April 5th. A dozen teams took part in the last tournament of the B.C. Volleyball Association women’s league season.
This was the team’s first season in Tier I, and in tournament after tournament, the Extreme have proven that they can hold their own against the top teams in the province.
The Extreme team faced three powerhouse teams in pool play, including Party of Six, Paradise Cove and UBC Junior Varsity.
Extreme played well against Paradise Cove and Party of Six, but ended up losing both matches in two games.
Afterwards they faced a young UBC JV team and won two out of three matches, 25-11, 13-25, and 15-8, which put them in third in their pool. With only the top two teams in each pool heading into the championship bracket, the Extreme were left to battle it out in the consolation bracket.
Here they faced a strong Vancouver Island team that went to three games, but the Extreme ended up losing 25-21, 18-25, 11-15.
"We were a bit disappointed with our final placement of eighth place, but we have to remember that this is our first year playing Tier I," says Carlee Howell. "Next year will be the third year that most of our players have been together, so we hope to do better next season."
