Extremely busy weekend for RCMP

Two officers roughed-up

The Whistler-Pemberton RCMP had a busy long weekend with 96 calls for service. That included 10 bear calls, seven noise complaints, five disturbances, 21 tickets for open liquor and 17 arrests for being drunk in a public place. Police also attended two fights, one of which resulted in the arrest of three males from Burnaby and Vancouver, and who are facing assault charges after instigating the fight with doormen for a local establishment.

Two RCMP officers were also assaulted. In one incident, a 27-year-old male was taken into custody after refusing to leave a licensed establishment on Saturday. When he was arrested he became combative and kicked a female officer in the face.

In the second incident, members of a foot patrol detained four males for drug possession. While in handcuffs, a 25-year-old male from Vancouver attempted to knee an officer in the groin.

Neither officer sustained significant injuries, and both suspects are facing criminal charges.

RCMP members were also busy with the highway. During checks on Highway 99, the RCMP issued four 24-hour driving prohibitions for alcohol. Officers also responded to four minor traffic accidents in which weather was a factor, as well as one major incident.

In the early hours of Friday, Nov. 11 the RCMP attended an accident involving a southbound vehicle, just north of the Brew Creek Lodge turnoff. The vehicle had gone off the road when the driver fell asleep and struck a tree.

The driver, a 23-year-old male from Richmond, was not licensed and had been drinking. He is being charged with Impaired Driving Causing Bodily Harm. His passenger, 28-year-old passenger female from Delta, was taken to the Squamish hospital and treated for minor injuries.

The RCMP also attended a domestic assault on Saturday evening. A 38-year-old Whistler woman was arrested for striking her husband with a fireplace shovel. The 35-year-old male was not injured. Charges are being considered.

The Squamish RCMP were also busy. On Nov. 5, between 6 p.m. and 12 a.m., thieves stole a portable generator from the industrial park. It is described as a Multiquip "MQ Power 75KVA" generator, and is white with black markings. It is square in shape, and is mounted on a tandem axle trailer.
