When: Sept. 18-21

Did you hear the one about the mountain resort town that decided to host a comedy festival?

Whistler will become a much funnier place in the upcoming weeks as the first ever Comedy in the Sky comedy festival kicks off on Sept. 18.

A joint project by Sweat Equity Productions and the Resort Municipality of Whistler, the festival will bring in some of the biggest names on the Canadian comedy circuit. Among the many scheduled to appear are sketch comic Jessica Holmes of TV’s the Holmes Show, Nicaraguan-born Martha Chaves, "Brown Bomber" Russell Peters, and Laughs Across America winner Gilson Lubin.

Several local establishments including the Cinnamon Bear, the Crab Shack, the Crystal Lounge, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler, the Garibaldi Lift Company (GLC), and Merlin's will act as festival venues.

In addition to stand-up and improv acts, a comedy movie marathon will run throughout the festival at the Village 8 Cinemas. The roster contains Hoser icon Strange Brew, lingo spawning ’80s classic Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and selections from the Monty Python canon.

Those who like to be high when they watch comedy will want to attend a special performance in the Roundhouse Lodge at the top of Whistler Mountain in an attempt to set a Guinness World Record for audience elevation. Duffers can try their hand against headliner comedians in the Whistler Golf Club’s Tee Off With a Joke.

Tourism Whistler interim President and CEO Barrett Fisher deemed the festival "a great addition to Whistler's year-round portfolio of events." The festival has the potential to increase business during the slower fall season. Package rates for accommodation and festival tickets are currently being offered through Whistler’s central reservation service.
