Twelve Whistler restaurants will be participating in this year’s Dining Out For Life event, which takes place Thursday, March 15.

On that day, more than 150 participating restaurants from Whistler to White Rock will donate 25 per cent of their food revenues to two AIDS-related charities, A Loving Spoonful and Friends For Life.

A Loving Spoonful delivers free, nutritious meals to men, women and children living with AIDS. Friends For Life operates The Diamond Centre For Living, a wellness centre where more than 1,000 clients live with HIV, AIDS and cancer. Clients are able to access, free of charge, a wide range of therapies designed to combat the sense of hopelessness and anxiety that go with terminal illness.

Christine’s on Blackcomb is the only Whistler restaurant that is participating in Dining Out For Life at lunch time. Eleven Whistler restaurants will be donating 25 per cent of their food revenues from dinner on March 15. Those restaurants are: Araxi, Portobello, La Rúa, Las Margaritas, Monk’s Grill, Black’s Original Ristorante, Quattro, Garibaldi Lift Co., Kypriaki Norte, Durlacher Hof and The Bear Foot Wine Bar.

Joel Thibault opened his new Bavaria Restaurant, in the location formerly occupied by Fogata, last week.

The Bavaria Restaurant specializes in fondues, raclette, schnitzel and other specialties found in the Alps of Europe. There are also some special German beers.

Market catering opens in Function

Market Catering, The Grocery Store’s catering service, has opened the doors to their new location in Function Junction, giving an estimated 1,800 employees that work in the industrial park one more option for breakfast and lunch.

The Market Catering location offers a full selection of the grab and go foods that they offer at the Grocery Store, including sandwiches, lunch wraps, breakfast wraps, salads and pastas. They also serve coffee, tea, drinks and a variety of convenience store items such as gum and licorice.

Market Catering is located at 1380 Alpha Lake Road.

Pastry and teamwork

Two words that don’t go together come together when Pastry Chef and Team Building Consultant George Geary holds fort at four team building baking classes at the Whistler Cooking School from March 6 to 9.

Geary has taught teamwork and pastry in over 72 culinary schools in 34 states, and is a frequent guest chef on the Food Network. He has contributed to four cookbooks and has been a regular contributor to several food and pastry magazines, and, less famously, is an official spokesperson for the U.S. Radish Council.

His four-day workshop, which runs from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Whistler Cooking School (119-4295 Blackcomb Way – by Whistler Music and the Puppy Zone) will cover Miniature Pastry and Cookies on day one, Cake and Cheesecakes on day two, Pies and Tarts on day three, and Easy Yeast Breads on day four.

To book a spot in any of these classes, contact the Whistler Cooking School at 935-1848 or visit the Web site at www.whistlercookingschool.com.

Guess the month

Not that it has anything to do with food (according to some), but March is Tofu Month. In tofu’s favour: it’s cholesterol-free, low in saturated fat and sodium, and is an excellent source of protein. The arguments against tofu: it’s tofu.
