Araxi celebrates again

New Year’s Eve celebrations at Araxi Restaurant were enjoyed by a full house, just as the eatery’s 20 th anniversary celebration was at the end of November.

The anniversary fell during the resort’s Cornucopia festival so chefs and wine experts paired up to share an evening of exceptional fare.

Owner Jack Evrensel describes Araxi – named for his wife – as the foundation of his other restaurants, CinCin Ristorante, Blue Water Cafe and Ouest, all in Vancouver.

Chefs from his other restaurants joined Araxi executive chef Scott Kidd to create a menu which reflected the Whistler restaurant’s love of local fare.

Guests were treated to Miso glazed poached Sablefish, Smoked Steelhead and poached scallop Rosace, Boudin of pheasant with pine mushroom cappuccino, roast suckling pig and loin of venison with Boulangere potatoes, among other gourmet delights.

Each of the courses was paired with exceptional wines from California’s Chateau St. Jean and Beringer.

After the dinner the tables were pushed back and the doors opened to an additional 200 guests invited to join the revelry.

Among those spotted as guests were Global TV news anchor Tony Parsons, and chef Bob Blumer otherwise known as "The Surreal Gourmet" from the popular TV show of the same name on Canada’s Food Network.

New research out of Queen’s University in Ontario, and published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, show that regular exercise is at least as effective in losing weight as changes in diet alone.

Even working out without altering eating habits can help shed pounds and help prevent health problems said associate professor Robert Ross, an expert in energy metabolism.

Exercise helps build muscle while dieting without working out can result in the loss of vital lean tissue. So exercising is now considered more important than it once was in weight and fat loss largely because it improves the body’s ability to use sugars, which is important in preventing and controlling diabetes, and because of its ability to burn calories.

Everyone, said Ross, should do 30 to 60 minutes of walking or some other exercise everyday.
