Whistler Terry Fox Run 2001

This Sunday marks the 21st anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope. It marks 21 years of running for cancer research and 21 years of hope for cancer patients around the globe. It is a chance to reflect on one very remarkable individual who left the comfort and safety of his couch and embarked on one of the most incredible journeys of all time.

With the dip of his artificial toe into the frosty waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Terry said, "I’m not a dreamer, and I’m not saying this will initiate any kind of definitive answer or cure to cancer, but I believe in miracles. I have to."

Terry lost his body to cancer but he never allowed it to take away his soul. He taught us what it means to be a hero and more importantly, he has taught us what it means to be Canadian.

Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001 is your opportunity to contribute to the lives of all cancer patients by taking part in the Terry Fox 5/10K Walk or Run. Registration will start at Nesters Square at 9 a.m. and the event will begin at 10 a.m. Everyone is encouraged to attend, to walk, to run, to push a stroller or simply to cheer on all participants.

The finish line, also at Nesters, will be rocking to the sounds of a local Whistler band, Oon Gakka Chang and the kids will find lots of fun and games. All participants will be treated to scrumptious appies from some of Whistler’s finest restaurants.

"Participation in the Whistler Terry Fox run in previous years has been surprisingly low. This year we are hoping that more people, including families, will come out to honour this amazing person and the thousands of people living with cancer in Canada," says Joanne Turner, cancer survivor.

Volunteers are desperately needed to help with course registration, marshalling and finish line activities. For more information or to volunteer, call Joanne Turner at 604-938-1902.
