Without the volunteers there would be no adaptive ski program.
The program works because of the dedication of about 70-80 trained volunteers. But the program is growing at such a rate that there just simply isn't enough manpower for the demand.
"We're in a position where we have to turn people away," said program co-ordinator Larnie Meeking.
Meeking is the only paid member of staff.
For people who are interested volunteering as an adaptive ski instructor, consider the following things:
you must take the CADS course Canadian Association of Disabled Skiing; it's a three-day Level One course and can be taken through the Adaptive Ski Program at a cost of $45;
you must be at least an intermediate skier or snowboarder;
it's an asset if you have your CSAA or CASI but not a requirement;
they are looking for committed, enthusiastic and energetic individuals.
The program runs from the end of November until mid-April and is open seven days a week.
There are a limited number of seasons passes that are issued or volunteers may get a complimentary day pass in lieu of a day's volunteering.
Recruitment for next season will begin in October-November.
