Few surprises for first day of school

Although there were a few last minute additions, it was nothing that either Myrtle Philip Elementary School or Whistler Secondary School couldn’t handle.

Although there were a few last minute additions, it was nothing that either Myrtle Philip Elementary School or Whistler Secondary School couldn’t handle.

Aside from the 25 parents who were issued tickets for speeding in a school zone on Lorimer Road Tuesday morning, Myrtle Philip principal Bob Daly says the first day of school went smoothly.

"We’ve been doing registration all through the summer and had a pretty good idea last Friday how many students we could expect," he says. "As a result we created a new division this year, but we had a classroom available."

According to Daly, at the end of school last June there were 455 students enrolled in the English program, and this year there are 470.

"We got all the kids into classes and things are up and running."

At the high school, new principal Ken Davies said his first day in Whistler couldn’t have gone better.

"From my perspective, as someone who is new to the school, in one word – in was awesome," he said. "The numbers were up a little with a few additions at different grade levels, but when all is said and done we are right where we thought we would be."

There are currently 353 students enrolled in Whistler secondary, or eight more students than last year.
