The Whistler Film Festival and Whistler Filmmaker Forum are just 15 weeks away — and counting — and organizers are still accepting submissions for a number of awards and events.

The 2008 MPPIA Short Film Award is a partnership initiative between the Motion Picture Production Industry Association, British Columbia Film and the Whistler Film Festival, designed to celebrate the contributions of film and television to the province as a whole, by enabling one filmmaker an opportunity to realize their creative project. $15,000 in cash prizes and substantial donations of services “in-kind” from members of the partner organizations will be awarded to help the selected applicant complete their project with guidance of industry experts. The completed film will be premiered at the 2009 Whistler Film Festival.

The 2007 MPPIA Short Film Award winner was Marshall Axani, for his short film, “Light of the Family Burnam,” which will premiere at this year’s festival.

The 2008 Whistler Film Festival will also include the return of DOC TALK, a one-of-a-kind industry forum for documentary makers from Western Canada. The forum will take place on Dec. 3 and 4, showcasing the documentary production community to broadcasters from around the world. Up to 10 producers will have the chance to pitch their projects to Canadian and international broadcasters for feedback and potential partnership. Deadline for application is Oct. 1.
