A film made 35 years ago at a Polish film school has taken the Grand Prize at this year's Banff Mountain Film Festival.
Filmed in black and white in the Tatra Mountains, Odworot (Retreat) follows a climber's desperate retreat to find help for his injured partner.
The sole copy of Odworot was rescued from obscurity by Seattle architect Alex Bertulis, who spent the past year and a half restoring the film. The restoration reportedly set Bertulis back $10,000.
Festival jury member Mike Libecki described Odworot as "timeless and irreproducible."

Film Nights IV calls for screenings
Film Nights IV – the independent film community’s fourth screening night at the HUB Film and Internet Lounge – is calling for submissions for the next event on Nov. 30.
Along with the public screening and forum filmmakers are interviewed at the events for a corresponding show on local TV channel Cable 6.
Film Nights have been occurring monthly at HUB since August. Organizer Davin Peterson announced following Film Nights III that he will be taking steps to form a non-profit Whistler independent film society around the Film Nights events.
Submissions for Film Nights IV should be no longer than 10 minutes in length and must be received by Nov. 23 in mini-DV or DVD format. Films can be dropped off at HUB, or Cable 6 Studios in Whistler Village.
