fire report

A study done through the summer of 1998 to assess Whistler’s ability to respond to fire emergencies in the community was completed in October last year but it has yet to be tabled and adopted by council. Municipal administrator Jim Godfrey said several workshops have been held for councillors to discuss the study, however, it has not been made public. Municipalities traditionally have fire service inventories conducted once every 15 years. Whistler’s study was fast-tracked after a 10-year period because of the rapid pace of development since the 1988 study. The studies are done to ensure a community is able to adequately respond to emergencies over the next 15 year period. Indications are that the Whistler study is critical of some aspects of the resort’s fire infrastructure. A set of recommendations for Whistler have been made in the study and it will be council’s pleasure to prioritize and decide whether to act on them.
