Fisher, Brownlie appointed to Council on Tourism

13-member council to advise Tourism Minister Kevin Krueger

Tourism Whistler President and CEO Barrett Fisher and Whistler Blackcomb President and COO Dave Brownlie are two of 13 representatives from the tourism industry appointed to Tourism Minister Kevin Krueger's Minister's new Council on Tourism.

"The new council represents a broad cross-section of the tourism industry and reflects the diversity of B.C.'s distinct regions. Nearly half of the council's members have previously served on the board of directors of Tourism B.C., providing continuity and working with the balance of the council to continue building B.C.'s successful tourism sector," said Krueger. "The council's expertise and advice will directly impact how B.C. is marketed to the world as a top-notch tourism destination."

The appointment of the Council on Tourism follows August's surprise decision by the province to dismiss the Tourism B.C. board and president Rod Harris. Tourism B.C. was an independent Crown corporation but the tourism marketing agency will be brought into Krueger's ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts, effective April 1, 2010.

As part of the transition, the minister's Council on Tourism has been established to provide input and advice on marketing B.C. successfully to potential visitors from around the world.

In addition to Fisher and Brownlie the Council on Tourism includes:

Stuart McLaughlin, the president of Grouse Mountain Resorts, a director of Kicking Horse Mountain Resort and a past president of Tourism Vancouver. McLaughlin will chair the Council on Tourism;

Darcy Alexander, who currently provides operations and development management and planning services to Sun Peaks Resort, the Harvest Golf Club, Nippon Cable Canada Ltd., and Benchlands Development Ltd.;

Andrew Cohen, the senior executive of Fernie and Kimberley Resorts;

Keith Henry, the chief executive officer of the Aboriginal Tourism Association of B.C.;

Warren Buckley, the president and CEO of PavCo;

Steve Smith, president and CEO of several Prince Rupert hospitality-related businesses including the Crest Hotel and Pacific Inn;

Dr. Nancy Arsenault, currently on the boards of directors for Tourism Vancouver Island and Tourism Victoria, and formerly the dean of the Faculty of Tourism and Hotel Management at Royal Roads University;

Laird Miller, the chief financial officer of London Drugs;

Peter Casement, the president of the board of directors of Venture Kamloops;

Coralee Oakes, the executive director of the Quesnel District Chamber of Commerce and a former director of both the B.C. Chamber of Commerce and the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast Tourism Association;

Susan Barcham, the director of business development for Oak Bay Marine Group and a board member of Go2.
