The municipality is consolidating its plans for looking after Fitzsimmons Creek.

It has put out a call for a consultant to come up with a management plan for the creek.

"This work that we are asking consultants to assist us with is to develop operating parameters to ensure that the river is protected from damage, from an environmental perspective, while gravel is removed," said Brian Barnett, general manager of engineering and public works for the resort.

Every year the municipality surveys Fitzsimmons Creek to establish how much sand and gravel have been brought down the creek as part of the natural operation of the creek.

Eventually some of the gravel must be removed in order for the creek flow to remain safe. The Fitzsimmons Creek does flow through a flood protection zone and dykes are in place in key locations along its route.

Through the consultants the municipality wants to develop a long-term gravel removal plan. The plan must be environmentally sensitive and look to the protection of fish and wildlife in the creek.

"What the municipality wants is something that provides our workers with precise instructions in terms of the gravel removal program and it has to be done (in a way which) protects the environment," said Barnett.

The plan will also consolidate all the previous studies and plans done every time a development was completed along the Fitzsimmons.
