Pro shooters give tips on action/sports photography

What: Pro Photo Forum

When: Wednesday, April 19

Where: Telus Conference Centre

Tickets: $40

With the introduction of digital photography, the sports/action photography industry is becoming saturated with photographers. Digital cameras shorten the learning curve. Athletes are stepping behind the lens, realizing there is more money to be made behind the camera than in front of it. And the competition is getting tougher and tougher.

"Same amount of work plus lots more players equals stiff competition and a lower paycheque," said Leslie Anthony, editor of SBC Skier Magazine. "Competition is intense and connections are tough to make."

Learn from industry professionals how best to navigate both your camera and the industry at the Pro Photo Forum Wednesday, April 19 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Telus Conference Centre, part of the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival.

The forum includes discussion from a panel of industry professionals, including Eric Berger, J. Grant Brittain, Aaron Chang and Jon Foster. Anthony will facilitate the discussion.

The forum will unearth insider tips, such as getting to know the publication before submitting photos to ensure success.

"Some editors aren’t really looking for anything in particular and others are very specific," Anthony said. "With skiing for instance, magazines like Ski Canada will run anything, shot anywhere, with anyone in it no matter how gay or out-of-date it is. And at the other end of the spectrum, there are magazines like Powder that are exceptionally discriminating when it comes to things like cachet locations, current athletes on the latest equipment, rad subject matter and contemporary technical merit."

What catches his eye for Skier?

"One thing that is always in vogue with most, and that is a big focus at Skier, is innovative photography using new angles, methods or perspectives."

Professional pricing, image licensing copyright laws, equipment and lighting are a few of the other topics that will be addressed at the forum, along with the quality of the image.

The forum is $40. Register in advance by visiting
