Food bank filling up The community response to the recent community food bank crisis has been overwhelming says co-ordinator Mary Caverly. "It’s just been wonderful." Two weeks ago the Whistler Food Bank shelves were nearly bare. A food bank donation drive entitled Locals Helping Locals held by Garfinkel’s on Oct. 22 raised $500. Now management at the night-club, which holds a popular locals’ night every Thursday, say that they will continue the Locals Helping Locals program weekly. Caverly reports that two private benefactors both made donations of over $1,000 and now all municipal buses are carrying a box for donations to the food bank. Funds from last weekend’s Harvest Swing Dance, which raised money for the food bank and other community service endeavours, hasn’t been tallied up yet but the silent auction alone raised $7,600. "There are also bins at Nesters and IGA," says Caverly. "I have to keep emptying them. It’s a really neat community thing. Everyone has just been pulling together. It’s personally overwhelming. I want to thank everyone for the ongoing support. It’s still a wonderful small town."
