The forest fire danger rating was at moderate as of Wednesday, June 26, but local residents must still be on their guard when building campfires.

Whistler firefighters were called out to two different unattended campfires on Sunday, June 23, which had the potential to become large forest fires.

Both fires, one on a trail at the top of Emerald subdivision and one in a stone ring at Pine Point Park, had spread from their original spots.

Whistler firefighters were able to put out the fires before they spread even further.

Campfires should only be built in designated areas and people should make sure to fully douse their fires before leaving the site, according to the Whistler Fire Rescue Services.

In addition, as of midnight July 5 there will be an Open Burning Restriction Order on all open burning of industrial and agricultural machine piled woody debris.

This order is in conjunction with the existing backyard burning prohibition effective June 14.
