Former Whistler rider dominates track championships

Matt Chater, who moved from Whistler to the Lower Mainland

Matt Chater, who moved from Whistler to the Lower Mainland last winter to be closer to the Burnaby Velodrome, was consistently fast at the Track Nationals in Victoria last weekend. Although he didn’t qualify for the Olympics, he has proven himself to be one of the fastest cyclists Canada.

Chater got off to a slow start on Friday, where he was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Flying 200 Metre Sprint and was eighth in the 1000M Time Trial.

He returned on Sunday to help Team B.C. take third in the Men’s 400M Team Pursuit, and Team Schwalbe finish third in the Men’s Team Sprint. He then went on to finish seventh in the Men’s Spring and ninth in the Men’s Scratch Race.

Chater’s best results were on day four when he finished first overall in the Keirin, a high-speed race to the finish where all the riders are paced by a motorcycle for the first few laps and the first to the finish wins.

His team also finished fifth in the Men’s Madison race.
