A joint effort by more than a dozen health organizations will provide free depression screening today (Oct. 7) in Squamish as part of the annual "Beyond the Blues" depression anxiety education and screening day - one of 65 such events held in communities across the province.

The screening is available to anyone anonymously, with information provided on mental health issues and the available treatments. You can stop by to look or take a short self-test on depression, anxiety and risky drinking, and then talk to a clinician about your results. If you choose, they will direct you to the services that are available in your community.

There will be two sites set up in Squamish: one open to the general public on Oct. 6 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Squamish Public Library, and one at Totem Hall on Oct. 18 and 19 that is only open to members of the Squamish Nation.

The main funding partner is B.C. Mental Health and Addiction Services, which is an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority. Additional support comes from the Ministry of Children and Family Development. Black Press and CTV are also supporting the event.
