Freeskier killed in backcountry avalanche

Jamie Pierre killed at Snowbird resort in Utah

Jamie Pierre was famous for a lot of things, but to freeskiers everywhere he will always be known for his cliff drops - including a world record drop off Pyramid Gap at Grand Targhee, Wyoming where he descended over 80 meters (about 255 feet) the fast way, landing head-first.

Pierre was killed on Sunday, Nov. 13 at Snowbird in Utah when he triggered an avalanche on his snowboard and was carried off a small cliff. Snowbird doesn't officially open until this weekend, and avalanche control had yet to be done in that area.

Pierre, 38, came from Minnesota and called Utah home until recently moving to Big Sky, Montana. He did drop into Whistler from time to time to film and ski.

He is survived by his wife and two children.

Pierre's work can be seen in a number of films, including movies by Warren Miller, Teton Gravity Research, Rage Films and others.
