French firm wins tech contract for 2010 Olympics

The International Olympic Committee has selected Paris based Atos Origin to handle the information technology contract for the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver and Whistler.

The company won the same contract for the 2002 Salt Lake Games, and the Athens 2004 Summer Games. It will also look after information technology for the 2006 Winter Games in Torino and the Summer Games in Beijing in 2008.

The extension of their contract for 2010 and the 2012 Summer Games – the location of which is still to be announced – makes this the largest sports related information technology contract ever awarded.

"We are extremely pleased to have expanded out partnership with Atos Origin as the Worldwide IT Partner for two more Games," said IOC president Jacques Rogge. "Today the role and use of technology is vital for the staging of the Games."

The deal will bring about 100 employees to Vancouver as the company gets ready to provide servicing. Another 2,000 volunteers will also be needed as the Games get underway.

Atos will be responsible for developing, running and securing key information systems for the Games, including:

• Core Games management for accreditation, staff information, workforce management, medical services, sport entries and athletes qualifications.

• Information diffusion for the collection of all events data and diffusion on the Intranet, Internet, to the world press agencies and commentators.

• Operations management for the pre-Games central operations, management of the Technology Operations Centre, co-ordination of the venues and help desk services.

• Security of the Games IT infrastructure.
