From Calgary to Belgium

This week’s Punk Night an international affair

Who: Belvedere with The Resistance and Five Days Off

What: The Punk Night

When: Sunday, May 15

Sunday’s edition of The Punk Night is an international affair.

Belgian punk band Five Days Off joins longtime Calgary skate punks Belvedere and The Resistance – a female fronted band from Selkirk, Manitoba.

Canadian punk favourites Belvedere were last up this way for the summer 2004’s Grind Tour.

The band released its fourth full-length album, Fast Forward Eats The Tape, in 2004 on Montreal’s Union Label Group, the follow-up to their acclaimed 2001 project ’Twas Hell Said Former Child. Fast Forward has been lauded for its guitar and vocal hooks.

Belvedere’s Union labelmates the Resistance are also on the bill on Sunday night.

Canada’s answer to the Distillers, the band’s sound has been described as melodic, catchy dark pop-punk.

The Resistance released its debut album Plague The Nation in August 2003 on indie label Lonely Tree Records before getting picked up by Union.

The band’s newest album Revenge On The Riverside hits the streets on May 24 with The Punk Night show offering a sneak preview.

Belgium is mainly known for chocolate and caviar but after Sunday night, Whistlerites can add punk rock to that exclusive list.

Belgian band Five Days Off was formed in 1996 in Aarschot Belgium.

The four-piece band has three albums to their credit, the most recent being a split CD with Flatcat in January 2004.

The Punk Night is continuing to go strong through the off season and this triple threat more than proves it.

Freeflow back at the Boot

Vancouver reggae rockers Freeflow are back in town on Monday, May 16 for the Boot’s Monday Madness live music night.

The band was last here during the Telus World Ski & Snowboard Festival where they scored a plum gig opening for dancehall legends Toots and the Maytals on the festival’s outdoor main stage.
