FROM THE PIQUE CHAIR

Pique celebrates its eighth anniversary this month. Over the past eight years we have striven to bring our readers fair and accurate reporting. During the past couple of weeks our integrity has been questioned regarding current election reporting.

Our mission is about providing information and supporting activities that preserve mountain culture and enhance Whistler as a place for people to live, work and play. And to that end, Pique is committed to attracting the highest quality journalists, artists and business people and providing them with an environment that fosters creativity, initiative and independent thinking. We also ask our staff to challenge the status quo, to be bold, that mediocrity doesn't cut it.

Politics is not our defining mission and was not the motivation for starting Pique in 1994. However, it doesn't mean we won't get involved in the role that newspapers have played in communities around the world for many years. Newspapers and their publishers have a long history of political leanings and public support of candidates. Pique's publisher is no different. I'm willing to take a risk and support a candidate who I believe is the right choice to lead our community.

My involvement in the Dave Davenport for Mayor campaign has caused some to question the ability of our editorial staff, especially the editor, to be fair in their coverage of the election. It is simply not true. Pique would not compromise its objectives and no matter who wins this race we will continue to bring the issues to the public and tell the important stories that keep our public officials accountable. Pique readers embrace our independent voice and we remain loyal to those thousands of readers. If Pique's editorial staff decide to endorse candidates they will do so independently of the publisher.

My endorsement of Dave Davenport for Mayor is a challenge to the status quo. I believe it's time for change, a time for new ideas in this ever-changing, dynamic community.

I have also worked with Dave on an employee housing task force and witnessed first hand his commitment to back further solutions to our employee housing problem. He is a qualified candidate and an independent thinker.

This month, post election, we will celebrate our anniversary knowing our integrity and objectives remain intact.
