The UBC Alma Mater Society (AMS) still isn't sure what it plans to do with its aging Whistler Lodge.
The lodge issue was on an AMS council meeting agenda Wednesday, July 24. The discussion was focused on whether or not $15,000 would be spent on needed safety repairs to allow the lodge to operate through the winter ahead.
According to a meeting summary posted to the AMS website, members of the council voted against taking money from the council's Student Spaces Fund. Council members reportedly agreed that it makes sense to spend the money and keep the lodge open through the winter so the issue is expected to be up for discussion again at the next AMS council meeting on Aug. 24.
The AMS has in the past discussed shutting down the lodge, which was built in 1965, and selling the property. Previous meeting notes indicate that a demolition estimate has been established at $400,000. The lodge revenues haven't surpassed expenses in the last few years.
The lodge was built by students and has operated as a hostel offering low-cost accommodation for young people. The rates range from just $25 a night when three students book together to $1,200 a night to reserve the entire lodge.
