The Canadian flag, which surfed the crowd waiting to hear if Whistler would win the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, has been stolen.

It was hanging outside the Whistler Conference Centre, which is entering its final stages of upgrading.

"A lot of the guys on the site were pretty upset," said Mike Milholm, of Task Construction Management Inc.

"It’s an awful thing to have happen."

The flagwas donated to the site by Pocklington Building Systems Ltd. For Canada Day and beyond and was last seen around 10:30 p.m. by security on Monday night. A report has been made to police.

But Milholm said everyone just wants the 15 by 30 foot flag back – no questions asked.

The thief would have had to climb about 40 feet up to get it after breaching a security fence.

"They would have had to climb up there like monkey’s to get it down," said Milholm.

"It was very well tied down up there."
