Kögler Fund growing In the memory of Karen Kögler, who died in an ice climbing incident near Lake Louise in January, a small fund has been created to annually support one deserving girl through a year of Guiding in Whistler. "If you support the spirit of Girl Guides, then you know the kind of person Karen was," said Pat Rowntree, a former Girl Guide leader and now the commissioner of Whistler Girl Guides. Rowntree’s acquaintance with Kögler began in 1987 when she started leading the first Whistler Girl Guide company. "As the only senior Guide at the time, Karen often acted as my right hand, despite her young age. Her spark, intelligence and leadership abilities never ceased to impress me. I often thought she would achieve great things in her lifetime. She was an amazing kid." Kögler was 22 when she died. It costs $40 to send a girl to Guides and to date the Karen Kögler Memorial Fund has raised $400. Contributions will be gratefully accepted at the Whistler branch of the North Shore Credit Union, and can be deposited directly into account number 311043. Charitable tax receipts will be provided upon request.
