The province this week approved a master development plan for the Whitetooth ski area near Golden, B.C. that will guide a $200 million expansion of the resort. Golden Peaks Resorts Inc., a partnership between Grouse Mountain Resort Ltd. and Dutch construction giant Ballust Nedam International, plans to begin an eight-year, phased development this summer. The expansion includes six new ski lifts, a gondola, 2,250 square metres of commercial development at the base of the mountain, three new hotels totalling 442 rooms, 150 strata-titled chalet units, 298 townhomes and 65 detached homes. Oberto Oberti, the Vancouver man behind the proposed Jumbo Creek ski area in the Kootenays, is also involved in Whitetooth. Under the agreement with the province, the lift expansion will come first. The company will expand its ski facilities over 1,600 hectares of Crown land. Once the recreational facilities are built the company will be permitted to buy 136 hectares of Crown land for the housing and commercial area. The Whitetooth ski area, which is being renamed the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, has been in operation for several years serving the Golden area. It has about 1,700 vertical feet of skiing but much of its potential lies as a summer resort. Being on the Trans-Canada Highway and with considerable real estate potential, the resort is expected to attract interest from the Calgary market.
