Golfers raise money for Sea to Sky charities

Local charities will get a $55,000 boost from the money raised at the annual Telus Mountain Valley Golf Classic.

The popular tournament was held at Big Sky in Pemberton on Friday, Sept. 10, with all proceeds going to the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation.

The winning low net team was Garibaldi Mortgage with players Jason Kawaguchi, Mike Carney, Dave Beattie and Sofia Lofstrom.

Wendy Aitken won the putting contest, Rob Carmichael took men’s long drive and Sofia Lofstrom had the ladies long drive.

Pat Kelly took men’s closest to the pin, while Joanne Houssian got ladies closest to the pin.

Darcy Wark won the closest to the lemon contest and Warren McLeod won $500 in the Best Poker Hand contest and then generously donated it back.

The after-party at Dusty’s included an outdoor silent auction, martini bar and live music.

This was the ninth annual golf tournament in support of the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation. It is one of two major fundraisers held by the foundation every year.

Since 1993 the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation has raised more than $2 million for registered nonprofits in the community, making it the largest fundraiser in the area.

The foundation supports programs in the areas of health, human services, education, recreation, arts, culture and entertainment in the form of grants.

Sea to Sky non-profit organizations can apply to the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation for funding before Oct. 1. Applications are available online at www.whistlerblackcomb.com/wbfoundation.
