There was a bit of a boost for local arts groups this week, who have been struggling with programming funding in the wake of cuts to the provincial Gaming Grants.

The federal government has announced it will be kicking in $9,000 to support the Whistler Arts Council's 2010-2011 Performance Series, which will feature nine presentations of comedy, theatre and musical talent from Canadian and international artists.

The money comes from the Department of Canadian Heritage's Canada Arts Presentation Fund, which aims to provide Canadians with increased access to a rich variety of culture.

"The Government of Canada recognizes the important of supporting arts and culture at the community level," Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, James Moore, said in a press release issued Tuesday. "The Whistler Arts Council has a broad mandate which offers a wide variety of arts experiences to local residents and visitors."

"The Whistler Arts Council greatly appreciates the support we receive from Canadian Heritage for the Performance Series, one of our longest running programs," Doti Niedermayer, Executive Director of WAC, said. "The Government of Canada has been a strong supporter of arts, culture, and heritage in Whistler and a major contributor to the development of the sector."
