Vehicles will no longer be allowed to use the gravel section of Mamquam Road toward Quest University in Squamish.

The closure, which is effective immediately until further notice, runs from the bridge over Mashiter Creek to a section of road near the trailhead to Carpenter Son's Bridge close to Quest.

Pedestrians and cyclists will still be allowed to use the road. Single-direction industrial vehicles may also be given case-by-case approval from the District of Squamish (DOS).

In a DOS release on Sept. 17, the closure is necessary because "the road is too narrow and the embankment too steep in parts for cars to pass one another safely without significant risk." According to the release, the worst-case scenario is a vehicle being edged off the road and down the bank.

"Public safety is paramount in our operations and we are unwilling to take risks when it comes to safety on our roads," District of Squamish Mayor Patricia Heintzman said in the release.

Members of the public will still be able to access Ring Creek and Garibaldi Provincial Park via University Boulevard.

The DOS said it doesn't expect significant increase in traffic through Garibaldi Highlands, but has placed counters on The Boulevard to measure traffic before and after the closure.

The gravel section of Mamquam will be maintained for emergency use, and the DOS is open to improving the road in order to re-open it to traffic.
