The commercial sector is Whistler’s single highest energy consumer, consuming 39 per cent of the total energy used and emitting 39,900 tonnes of greenhouse gas a year.
But it is possible to change and reduce energy use with just a few simple steps.
That’s why the Resort Municipality of Whistler is hosting a workshop for small and medium sized businesses on effective energy savings.
It will host a special, four-hour session for Whistler businesses on Wednesday, Jan. 25, offered by Langara College Continuing Studies. Karun Koernig, Langara College instructor and energy and environmental management consultant, will lead the workshop from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Whistler Chamber of Commerce boardroom (above the Village Information Centre on 4230 Gateway Drive). The $45 registration fee includes an evaluation of your own workplace for energy efficiency upgrades. The workshop will cover identifying the greatest potential for energy savings, selecting the most cost-effective measures, calculating the payback for energy efficient retrofits, and the government grants, utility incentives, and energy retrofit financing available to businesses wishing to make energy efficiency renovations more economical. Koernig has managed Green Workplace Programs, focusing on energy efficiency, waste management and materials-use reduction.
