Forty-four riders took part in this inaugural event on Saturday, Sept. 25, a judged slopestyle event at the base of Whistler Mountain. Thirty-three of those riders were under the age of 18, including 15 groms aged 13 to 15.
From tailwhips to 360s to heel clickers, the riders broke out the full bag of BMX tricks. Competitors also made good use of the Staff Housing box, the wall ride and the quarterpipe.
Dan Csokonay of Calgary had the best run of the day, winning the Groms category and posting the highest score of the day with a 28.1.
Whistler’s Kyle McDonald was second in the Groms, and second overall, with a 26.8, while Alex Prochazka was third and third with a 24.6.
In the junior category, age 16 to 18, Trevor Chronister was the top rider with a score of 21.9. Justin Ralston was second with a 21.8, and Geoff Bulevich third in 21.5.
In the open women’s category, Wendy Robinson led the way with a 26.8, followed by Kim Saprunoff with a 26.1 and Angela Teng with a 25.1.
The Open Men 19-Plus group went to Stevin Tuchinsky with a 21.6. Jeff Leigh was second with a 21.3 and Travis Erickson third in 21.0.
The inaugural Bonyard Bike Jam was a success, attracting hundreds of spectators. There were no serious injuries, despite some truly spectacular crashes.
In addition to prizes for the top riders in each category, the overall top rider won an invite to compete in the 2005 Slopestyle Expression Session, which will take place during the second annual CrankWorx Mountain Bike Festival next summer.
