Gymnastics club hosts year-end show

The Whistler Gymnastics Club is wrapping up another year with its annual year-end show this Sunday, June 1.

The Whistler Gymnastics Club is wrapping up another year with its annual year-end show this Sunday, June 1.

Titled "The Flipping Gym Show (an inside joke among coaches and parent volunteers) Goes to Hollywood," this year’s performance will include the youngest pre-school gymnasts from the parks and recreation program, as well as routines from all ages and levels from Whistler Gymnastics. The highest level competitive team will also be putting on a special performance.

The club is coming off another successful year. Although the wait lists to get in are still long, the coaches and administrators feel the club is making progress.

"It’s been good. We’ve had the same group of staff and coaches for a while now, and because of this continuity the kids have all really developed their skills, and the club has been able to develop as well," said Whistler Gymnastics program director Tami Ross.

"The board of directors is really strong, and we got a lot done that will help us in the future. For example, the facility committee has been meeting all this year to work on future arrangements, and we’re a lot closer to one day having a facility of our own," she added.

Whistler Gymnastics is currently based at Myrtle Philip Community Centre, which means that coaches and athletes have to put up and take down the equipment for every session. Not only is this hard on the equipment, it can also cut into training time.

The athletes are also at a disadvantage because they don’t have a full spring floor to train on.

The Flipping Gym Show Goes to Hollywood will run from noon to 2 p.m. in the Whistler Secondary School gymnasium. It’s open to the public and admission is by donation.

The gymnastics season breaks for summer at the end of the school year in June, and resumes in September. Meanwhile, the club is hosting four summer camps, two in July and two in August, for gymnasts at the beginner to advanced level.
