Gymnastics contest winners

The Whistler Gymnastics Club kicked off a successful Gymnastics Awareness Week with a strong showing at a meet in Vancouver, then capped it off with a colouring and writing contest for the younger gymnasts.

The winning writer, and the winner of a Whistler Gymnastics tank top and shorts, was Lizzy MacIssac, age 12.

Why I love gymnastics:

"When I first joined gymnastics I was scared I wasn’t going to be as good as my friends and I was 100 per cent right. But my coach gave me confidence, and three years later I was good enough to go to the next level. After that I found out that my snowboarding was a lot better than before. I was able to do tricks without falling flat on my face. My instructor told me my balance was a lot better. After, my flexibility got better and I soon joined dance."

The Whistler Gymnastics club is hosting its first ever meet in March, starting with an interclub contest on Saturday, March 8 at Whistler Secondary. Between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., women will compete on the vault and the beam, and the men will compete on vault and trampoline.

The following day there will be a vault and beam competition for KIP, Zone, and Provincial Level 1 athletes. The morning meet will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the afternoon meet from 1 p.m to 5 p.m.

Whistler Gymnastics will be facing teams from Phoenix, Flicka, Renfrew, Bowen Island and Arbutus clubs.

Parents of athletes in the competitive program organized the event, but will need the help of all club members to help out before and during the event.

Before the meet, volunteers will be transporting the equipment from Myrtle Philip to the high school from 9 a.m. until approximately noon.

Help will also be needed to stock the concession stands, with proceeds from sales going towards the club.

To help out with the facility and equipment, contact Karin Jarratt at 604-894-5958. To help with the concession stand, contact Delsea DenDuyf at 604-932-1907, or Stella Manuel at 604-932-2626. Any general questions can be directed to program director Tami Ross at 604-902-3547 (905-FLIP).
