Gymnasts in the medals

The Whistler Gymnastics Club headed to the Delta Invitational last weekend to participate in provincial level 1 and 2 competitions, and the LEAP certification program, and came home with medals and personal bests in many events.

In the Level 1 Tyro competition, rookie Rebecca Flynn finished third all around out of more than 20 girls, with a gold medal on the beam, a fifth on the vault, and a sixth on both the bars and the floor.

Lenka Prochazka was fifth on the beam in the same category, and Desirae Smith, Jasmin Budge and Shannon Macdonald all managed to finish most events in the top-15.

In the Level 1 Novice contest, Nicola Halliwell finished eighth all around out of 20 competitors with a bronze medal on the beam and a seventh on the vault.

In the Level 2 Novice category, Kristi Poole-Adler was 10 th in her group, and managed a bronze medal on the vault.

Frances Moody, the provincial Level 2 beam champion, placed sixth all around in the second group out of 35 gymnasts with another gold medal on the beam. Poole-Adler also competed in that group, where she managed a 12 th on the vault and a sixth on the beam.

In the LEAP (LetÕs Evaluate our AthleteÕs Progress) program, which tests physical ability and skills, Whistler brought the largest group of any of the 14 clubs taking part.   In physical ability, Ali Marriott from Whistler passed the copper level, while Noelle Krazney, Tatiana Togarty, Keeley Wentzel, Jessie Budge, Jessica Girard, Cabrai Willis, Averi Willis and Hannah Raffler showed improvement.

In skills Alexandra Shuker received the highest colour ribbon, a red, and will move up to the bronze level for the next test event, along with her teammate Sydney Jackson. The other girls testing for their copper level were Cate Sproule, Kristina Bell and Megan Moody. Testing for bronze were Maye Akama and Julia Vodarek.
