The Whistler Gymnastics Club started their competitive season two weeks ago with some good news.

Alix Rusimovich, Whistler’s only provincial level 3 athlete, will represent Zone 5 at the B.C. Winter Games next weekend at Williams Lake, despite missing the mark at the last zone competition. She was close, however, and the obvious choice to go to the Games when one of the girls on the team was injured.

Two weeks ago the rest of the club’s competitive gymnasts took part in the annual Dogwood Invitational in the new Richmond Athletic Centre. There were up to 19 competitors in each category vying for awards, so the atmosphere was very competitive.

The provincial level 2 team took the third place team award for their efforts, led by Nicola Bennett in the open category (age 15 and up). She won all four events, beam, bars, vault and floor, and brought home the overall gold medal.

Natasha Quinn won a gold medal on the vault in the Novice category (ages 13 and 14). In the Tyro category (11 and 12), Niki Sadler won gold on the vault while Kristi Poole-Adler, in her first meet at this level, placed sixth on the beam.

In the Argo competition (10 and younger) Frances Moody earned a silver medal on the beam, placed fourth on the bars, and fifth in the vault and floor to take the all around bronze.

The provincial level 1 team also had some results to celebrate.

In the Novice category, Holly Hetherington took the bronze on the beam, fourth on the floor and fifth on the vault and bars to earn another the bronze all around medal. Rachel Kleinman captured the gold medal on beam, and was fifth in vault and floor to finish fifth overall.

In the Tyro competition, Michaela D’Artois was fourth on the bars, Becky Boese was eight on the beam, Samantha DePatie was ninth on the bars, and Angelina Manuel was 10 th on the bars.

For the Level 1 Argos, Makinna Coombs won a silver on the bars, Annik Tetreault was fourth on the beam and sixth on the bars, and Riley McSkimming was sixth on the beam.

Whistler Gymnastics next challenge is the Carol Lenz Memorial Meet in Surrey on March 2 and 3.
