Gymnasts off to a good start

The Whistler Gymnastics Club attended its first official meet of the season this past weekend, hosted by the Surrey Gymnastics Society, and earned medals in several categories against a large field of competitors from clubs across the Lower Mainland.

In Level 2 Novice, Lenka Prochazka tied for third on the vault, placed eighth on the bars and 14 th on floor to rank 17 th out of 28 girls in the category. Meg Halliwell posted her personal best on the beam, while Tyece Fairweather’s best result was on the floor.

In Level 2 Tyro, Maye Akama placed ninth all around out of 24 competitors with a 10 th place finish on vault, two 12 th place finishes on bars and beam and a 13 th place finish on floor. Hannah Raffler won a bronze medal on the vault, and placed 11 th on the beam. Jenya Vincent-Nordin’s best result was on the vault.

In Level 1 Tyro, Alex Shuker placed second all around out of 19 athletes with bronze medals on floor, vault and beam and a seventh place finish on bars. Ali Marriott won gold medals on the vault and bars, was ninth on beam and 14 th on the floor to place fifth all around.

Averi Willis was 10 th on vault, eighth on bars, fifth on beam and 11 th on floor to place eighth all around, and Cate Sproule was first on vault, fifth on bars, 16 th on beam and ninth on floor to place ninth all around. Katrina Underhill was eighth on the vault, 13 th on the beam and 14 th on bars.

In Level l Argo, Keeley Wentzel placed fifth all around out of 43 competitors, placing fourth on vault, first on bars, ninth on the floor and 19 th on beam. Carly Mann was 11 th on vault, and 22 nd on both bars and beam. Ellie Krasny was 12 th on the bars, and Cambria Willis tied for ninth on beam and 19 th on floor. Jessica Girard was 22 nd on bars. Jessie Budge was 18 th on bars. Charlette Mahaney was 17 th on vault.

In Level 2 Open, Nicola Halliwell was sixth on vault, first on bars, seventh on beam and fourth on floor, while Sonya D’Artois was fourth on vault, seventh on bars, third on beam and sixth on floor.

Whistler Gymnastics next meet is a qualifier for the provincials, hosted by Pheonix Gymnastics in Vancouver at the end of March.
