Gymnasts on the podium in Victoria

This past weekend the Whistler Gymnastics Club headed to the 28 th annual Garden City Invitational in Victoria where they would face their toughest competition so far this season with a huge turnout from clubs from the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.

In Provincial Level 1 Tyro, Jamie Gormely earned silver medals on the vault and bars to place second all around out of 25 athletes. Caitlin MacConnachie was seventh on floor and eighth on vault and beam to place eighth all around.

Keeley Wenzel also place second all around out of 36 athletes in Provincial Level 2 Tyro with a silver medal on the beam and fourth place finishes on the vault and bars.

Cambria Willis also made the podium with a bronze medal on the beam, and was seventh all around. Kat Kranjc earned a bronze on the floor and was seventh on the bars to place 11 th . Carly Mann earned a silver on the vault and a bronze on the bars, but tied Kranjc for 11 th .

Jessie Budge placed 13 th all around with strong performances on the beam and vault. Christina Saldat, Ellie Krasny and Charlotte Mahoney finished further back in the pack, but all three landed new tricks for the first time in competitions. Saldat landed her first back tuck on her floor routine, Ellie Krasny was strong on the vault and Mahoney got up after a fall on the beam to stick two new tricks.

Ali Mariott opted to move up to the Provincial Level 2 Open category against older girls and managed to place first all around with a gold on the vault, silver on the bars and a bronze on the floor.

In Provincial Level 3 Open, Nicola Halliwell earned a silver on the beam and bronze medals on the vault and bars to place third all around. Teammate Rebecca Flynn was unable to compete after injuring her knee in soccer prior to the meet.

Whistler gymnasts also raked in the special awards. Leah Brownlie and Kat Kranjc won the handstand contests in their respective age categories against 40 other gymnasts.

Gabby Flynn won the Flying Vault award and Leah Brownlie won the Best Choreography award for her floor routine.

Next up is the Ogopogo Invitational in Kelowna the first weekend in June, followed by Whistler's Gymnastics' year-end show from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 13 at Spring Creek Community School. All levels of gymnasts will take part in the show, from the youngest parent and tot programs to the club's Provincial Level 3 athletes. The competitive trampoline classes will also put on displays and information will be shared about the new Oros gymnastics facility that will house the club next year.

Summer camps are also posted online at www.whistlergymnastics.com, with registration getting underway on June 1.
