Balding for Dollars helps Children’s Hospital; Blackcomb Barbers celebrates 10 years

Rarely does a reporter leave an interview with a condom, some bubble gum, a free haircut and a bunch of funny stories to amuse friends with.

But that’s exactly what happened to this reporter when I went to talk to Amanda Stock about the 10 th anniversary of her barbershop at Nesters.

Stock said all Blackcomb Barber customers receive bubble gum and, if they’re the appropriate age, a free condom as well.

By all accounts Stock is one of those local legends most people love, and for her store’s 10 th anniversary, this bubbly 40-year-old wants to let her customers know how much she appreciates them.

Stock came to Whistler in 1994 after listening to scores of men complain about the fact that there was no barber in Whistler.

"I used to work at the barbershop in Lynn Valley and I listened to the guys complain about the fact that there were four hair salons but no barbershop up here," Stock said.

"So I opened up a barber shop at Nesters and two years later I opened this one in Function."

Stock admitted she had cut lots of "famous" hair and been told countless tales.

"People tell us everything… it’s like a Coyote Ugly barbershop."

During her 10-year tenure Stock has also developed several catchy phrases such as "Amanda goes for the bum fluff" and "commando the cranium crusher", which she says help people remember her store.

Festivities involving Blackcomb Barbers start on April 3 with Balding for Dollars at the Garibaldi Lift Co. and continue on April 14 with Cop Cuts at Nesters barbershop.

"I just want to do a bunch of stuff to thank the customers… because it’s been a hell of a 10 years," Stock said.

At Balding for Dollars, Stock and a number of her barbers will be shaving hair for the Whistler Friends of B.C. Children's Hospital.

The fundraiser will run between 3.30 and 6 p.m. and proceeds go to support kids with cancer at the B.C. Children's Hospital.

Last year 45 people went bald for the cause and raised $22,000.

Participants can pre-register for shave times by calling 604-905-2533 and obtain pledge sheets at www.baldingfordollars.com.

Nearly two weeks after Balding for Dollars, Stock and her team of five barbers will be at it again at Cop Cuts, which is held in support of the RCMP.

Cop Cuts will run between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. and Stock said the first 10 haircuts would be free.

"There will be four or five of us cutting hair and we’d appreciate a minimum $10 donation," Stock said.

"We raised $23,000 last year so we’re aiming to beat that."
