The field was kept small by other events taking place, including the national halfpipe and snowboardcross championships at Cypress, and the lure of fresh snow ate into the last minute crowd, but a solid 40 athletes turned out to compete.
It was a tough day, with the snow slowing down riders through the transition and making it almost impossible for younger skiers and snowboarders to clear the lip of the pipe. Fog also rolled in partway through the contest. As always, athletes made the best of the situation.
In Male Snowboard 17-Plus, Tamo Campos took the gold medal by more than four points, followed by Oliver Roy and Brad Martin. For the Female Snowboard 17-Plus category, it was My S Vennson, followed by Andrea Ingham and Ali Tracey.
In Male Skiers 17-Plus, Yuki Veda was first, Yuta Mattsunaga second and Kyzuran Hatten third. On the women’s side, it was Jenny Strong in first, followed by Yumi Koyama in second.
Nicola Halliwell competed alone in the Ski Girls 16 and Under category, and posted the top score for any of the female skiers.
In Ski Boys 14 to 16, national moguls champion Jae Woo Choi was first, more than four points ahead of Jake McGregor and Alexander Wozny.
The Ski Boys 13 and Under category, which had nine participants, went to Alexander Geddes, followed by Taylor Wilson and Mitchell Wilson.
In Ski Girls 13 and Under, Yuki Tsubota of Pemberton was the top skier with a score six points higher than any in the men’s under 13 category. Kerry-Anne Hamilton was second.
In Snowboard Boys 14 to 16, Kota Kagoshima was first, followed by C.J. Henderson and Chase Harley.
Jacqueline McDonald competed alone in the Snowboard Girls 14 to 16 race.
Wade McCracken won the Snowboard Boys 13 and Under competition, followed by Brin Alexander and Luke Lattin.
The local competition season has now wrapped up, except for skiers and snowboarders who have qualified for the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival’s Big Air and Superpipe events.
