Happy 10th Birthday Adele Campbell!

New exhibit celebrates all-star artists from gallery’s roster

What: Group of 10 Exhibit Opening

Where: Adele Campbell Fine Art Gallery

When: Nov. 29, 5-9 p.m.

The walls are warm, the lighting soft, the paintings framed and hung in a classic style. The Adele-Campbell gallery on the lobby level of the Delta Whistler Resort has the ability to draw in passersby like the smell of hot chocolate.

It’s an integral part of any village artwalk. The fact that it has been so for the past decade is the inspiration behind the latest AC exhibit, which debuts this Saturday evening.

Essentially it’s the beginning of a month-long 10th birthday party the gallery is throwing for itself in the form of an exhibit they’ve cheekily titled the "Group of 10," a split reference to their anniversary and the iconic Canadian Group of Seven artists. And maybe there’s one more thing.

"We’re 10 years old, we’ve got the Group of 10; the staff here is all perfect 10s," jokes owner and gallery director Michelle Kirkegaard.

Over the years the gallery has remained in the same location and continues to be locally owned and operated.

The Group of 10 artists are a crew of house all-stars well known to regular Adele Campbell visitors. Cameron Bird, Rick Bond, Ken Campbell, Laura Harris, David Langevin, Berge Missakian, Nancy O’Toole, Mike Svob, and Ray Ward – the names read like a greatest hits album.

While collectively their works cover everything from rich oil landscapes, to Rockwellian outdoor scenes, to ursine-themed nature paintings, the common thread is their heritage. Almost all the AC Group of 10 call B.C. home. It’s something Kirkegaard says she feels is important, giving Canadian artists, and more specifically, B.C. artists, due space on the walls.

This Saturday’s exhibit opening gives gallery goers a chance to put a face to an aesthetic as many of the Group of 10 are expected to be in attendance.

"Saturday night will be a show, and not so much a sale," Kirkegaard emphasizes. "We want to get Whistler in to see these great B.C. artists, talk to them and meet them. To have artists of this calibre here is amazing. Here in Whistler we’re fortunate to be living amongst this art."

The opening night reception for the Adele Campbell’s Group of 10 exhibit runs from 5 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29. Call 604-938-0887 for more information.
